What is vmwVmGuestState?

The guest OS's current operation mode as reported by VMware Tools: running, shuttingdown, resetting, standby, notrunning, or unknown if guest info isn't available. An admin uses this to distinguish a VM that's powered on but mid-shutdown/reboot from one that's fully running normally.
