Last Updated: 2016-07-19

Category: VMware Virtualization

Description: Monitors VMware vCenter High Availability cluster state, node roles, and failover readiness.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VMWARE-VCHA-MIB?

VMWARE-VCHA-MIB is VMware's vendor-specific SNMP module for the vCenter Server High Availability (VCHA) feature, which protects a vCenter Server instance against outages using an Active/Passive/Witness three-node cluster. It exposes cluster topology and state data — node roles, network addresses, cluster state and mode, database and file replication synchronization status, and failover-related flags. Its central monitoring purpose is software/service status rather than physical hardware: it reveals whether the Passive node is properly synchronized (vmwVchaDbReplicationState, vmwVchaIsFileProviderInSync) and ready to take over, and whether a failover was planned or unplanned (vmwVchaIsPlannedFailover), which is critical for confirming vCenter's own high-availability posture. It depends conceptually on the VMware vCenter/vSphere management stack rather than standard IETF MIBs, and includes its own notification group (vmwVCHANotifications) for failover events. It is typically deployed by VMware administrators monitoring vCenter Server Appliance clusters configured for VCHA to ensure the management plane itself has no single point of failure. Engineers can download the VMWARE-VCHA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-VCHA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCHA cluster)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll vmwVchaClusterState and vmwVchaClusterMode to confirm the cluster is healthy and in Enabled mode, then check vmwVchaTargetNodeRole and vmwVchaActive/vmwVchaPassive to identify which VM currently holds each role. vmwVchaDbReplicationState and vmwVchaIsFileProviderInSync would be watched to ensure the Passive VM's database and filesystem stay in lockstep with the Active VM, since a lagging replication state means a failover would lose data. A vmwVCHANotifications trap firing with vmwVchaIsPlannedFailover set to false would alert the team to an unplanned failover event requiring investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • cluster state and mode
  • active/passive/witness node role
  • database replication sync status
  • file replication sync status
  • planned vs unplanned failover status
