Category: VMware Virtualization
Description: Defines VMware ESX SNMP agent capabilities, supported MIB groups, and compliance statements.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-ESX-AGENTCAP-MIB?
VMWARE-ESX-AGENTCAP-MIB is an AGENT-CAPABILITIES module for VMware ESX/ESXi, documenting which SNMP MIB groups and object variations are supported by the VMware ESX SNMP agent across different ESX releases. It does not define its own management objects with runtime values; instead it declares compliance/capability statements (vmwEsxCapability) tied to specific ESX software versions. As such it provides no direct hardware or software status data itself, but is used by management systems to determine which host/VM/hardware-status MIB objects from other VMware MIBs a given ESX host version actually implements. It is entirely dependent on the underlying VMware MIBs it profiles, such as host resource and virtual machine MIBs, rather than standing alone. It is used during ESX host onboarding into an NMS or SNMP monitoring tool to confirm supported capability sets per software release. Engineers can download the VMWARE-ESX-AGENTCAP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-ESX-AGENTCAP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware ESX/ESXi hypervisor host
Monitoring Examples
This is a conformance/AGENT-CAPABILITIES module with no runtime monitoring objects of its own; vmwEsxCapability simply declares, per ESX release, which MIB groups the SNMP agent supports, so there is no monitoring scenario to describe here.
