Category: VMware Virtualization

Description: Defines VMware vRealize Operations event notifications for performance anomalies and smart alerts.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VMWARE-VCOPS-EVENT-MIB?

This MIB defines the SNMP trap notifications sent by VMware vCenter Operations Manager (vCOPS, now vRealize Operations) to alert external systems of performance anomalies detected in a VMware virtual environment. It is a trap-only module carrying alert metadata - the affected entity's name and type, a criticality level, a root-cause description, a message, an alert type/subtype, and a timestamp - rather than polled tables. Its value for monitoring is as a software-status alerting layer: it reports smart-alert conditions (for example a VM, host, or datastore performing abnormally) along with an automated root-cause hint, letting an NMS operator prioritize and diagnose an issue as soon as vROps's analytics engine flags it. It depends on and complements the underlying performance data vCenter Operations Manager collects from vSphere, rather than on IETF standard MIBs. It is deployed wherever vCenter/vRealize Operations Manager monitors VMware virtual infrastructure at scale and needs to forward alerts to an external SNMP trap receiver. Engineers can download the VMWARE-VCOPS-EVENT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-VCOPS-EVENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VMware vCenter/vRealize Operations Manager environments monitoring vSphere hosts and VMs

Monitoring Examples

This module defines traps rather than polled tables: an NMS receiving one would read vmwareAlertEntityName/vmwareAlertEntityType to identify which VM, host, or datastore triggered the alert, vmwareAlertCriticality to prioritize the response, and vmwareAlertRootCause/vmwareAlertMessage to see vROps's automated root-cause diagnosis - for example a critical alert on a host entity whose root cause points to CPU contention.

What Can Be Monitored

  • alert criticality
  • affected entity name/type
  • alert root cause
  • alert message/type/subtype
  • alert timestamp
