Description: Defines SNMP trap notifications sent by vCenter Server, primarily for alarm state changes on managed entities.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is VMWARE-VC-EVENT-MIB?
VMWARE-VC-EVENT-MIB is VMware's MIB defining SNMP trap/notification objects sent by vCenter Server, the central management platform for VMware vSphere virtualized environments. It exposes trap payload fields describing the notification type, the affected host or virtual machine name, the target object and its type, and the old and new status values for an alarm state change. Its monitoring purpose is squarely fault/status alerting for virtualized infrastructure: it notifies operators when a host, VM, or other managed entity's alarm status changes (e.g., from green to red/yellow), effectively surfacing software and infrastructure health events rather than exposing pollable hardware counters directly. It is a notification-only companion to VMware's broader vSphere/vCenter management APIs and MIBs, with no data objects meant for periodic polling. It is typically deployed wherever vCenter Server manages ESXi hosts and virtual machines, with VMWARE-VC-EVENT-MIB SNMP monitoring forwarding alarm-state changes to a trap receiver/NMS.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-VC-EVENT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- VMware vCenter Server
- VMware ESXi host / virtual machine (as monitored entities)
- VMware vCenter Server (vSphere management platform)
Monitoring Examples
A network management system configured as an SNMP trap receiver would receive a vmwVpxdTrapType notification carrying vmwVpxdHostName or vmwVpxdVMName along with vmwVpxdOldStatus and vmwVpxdNewStatus, revealing that a specific host or VM's alarm state just changed (e.g., from normal to alert). The vmwVpxdTargetObj and vmwVpxdTargetObjType fields identify exactly which vSphere entity triggered the alarm. A flood of traps showing vmwVpxdNewStatus escalating to a critical value across multiple hosts would indicate a cluster-wide infrastructure problem rather than an isolated VM issue.
What Can Be Monitored
- alarm state change (old vs. new status)
- affected host name
- affected VM name
- trap/notification type
- target object identity and type
