What Is VMWARE-PRODUCTS-MIB?

VMWARE-PRODUCTS-MIB is a VMware-authored MIB module whose sole purpose is to define the OID identifiers returned as sysObjectID by SNMP agents running on specific VMware products, such as vmwESX (ESXi hosts), vmwVC (vCenter Server), vmwDVS (Distributed Virtual Switch), vmwServer, vmwVCOps, and vmwGenericAppliance. It does not define any runtime data objects, counters, or traps of its own; it is purely an identification/registration module used so a management station can tell which VMware product an agent belongs to. Consequently it has no direct role in monitoring hardware or software status such as uptime, CPU/memory load, or fault conditions — that data comes from other VMware or standard MIBs (or more commonly from the vSphere API) once the product has been identified via this MIB's OIDs. It depends only on the base SNMPv2-SMI enterprise-registration conventions and on SNMPv2-MIB's sysObjectID object to be meaningful. It is referenced whenever an SNMP management station polls sysObjectID against an ESXi host, vCenter Server, or other VMware appliance to determine product identity for inventory or polling-profile selection. Keeping a VMWARE-PRODUCTS-MIB reference on hand is useful for quickly matching a polled sysObjectID value to the correct VMware product family during inventory discovery.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VMWARE-PRODUCTS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • VMware product family, entire range (ESXi, vCenter, DVS, Server, vCOps, generic appliance) (sysObjectID registration, no data objects)

Monitoring Examples

This module defines only product-identification OIDs (vmwESX, vmwVC, vmwDVS, vmwServer, vmwVCOps, vmwGenericAppliance) and carries no runtime monitoring objects, so there is no polling-for-anomaly scenario to describe; a management station would instead read sysObjectID from an agent and match it against these OIDs (e.g., vmwESX) purely to identify that the agent is running on an ESXi host before applying VMware-specific monitoring elsewhere.
