Category: ATM and WAN Transport

Description: Manages virtual circuit configuration, status, and performance statistics on WAN equipment.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is VC-MIB?

VC-MIB is a vendor-neutral-style enterprise MIB for managing Virtual Circuits (VCs) on WAN equipment, such as Frame Relay or ATM virtual circuits, tracking their configuration, connection status, and performance statistics. It exposes a virtual-circuit statistics table keyed by pipe/instance position with fields for the VC's name, byte counts in/out and total, and live versus newly established connection counts. Its monitoring focus is performance/traffic and connection-state oriented: administrators track byte throughput per virtual circuit and the number of live versus new connections to detect congestion, circuit flapping, or unexpected traffic drops on a given VC. There is no explicit dependency noted on other standard MIBs beyond general WAN interface addressing conventions implied by its pipe/position indexing scheme. It is typically deployed on WAN switches or routers terminating Frame Relay/ATM virtual circuits in service-provider or enterprise WAN environments. Engineers can download the VC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in VC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • WAN switch or router terminating Frame Relay/ATM virtual circuits

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll vcStatTable/vcEntry rows keyed by vcPipePosition/vcPosition to retrieve vcName, vcByteCountIn, vcByteCountOut, and vcByteCountTotal for a specific virtual circuit, watching for a sudden drop in byte counts that could indicate a failed or congested VC. vcLiveConnections versus vcNewConnections would be compared to detect abnormal churn, such as a VC repeatedly reconnecting (flapping) rather than maintaining a stable live connection. A vcLiveConnections value dropping to zero while the circuit is expected to be active would be a clear fault indicator.

What Can Be Monitored

  • virtual circuit name
  • byte count in/out/total
  • live connection count
  • new connection count
  • VC position/pipe identification
