Category: Juniper/Unisphere Broadband

Description: Manages SONET/SDH physical layer interfaces, alarms, and performance on Unisphere ERX routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Unisphere-Data-SONET-MIB?

Unisphere-Data-SONET-MIB is a vendor-specific enterprise module from Unisphere Networks (later Juniper's ERX platform) that manages SONET/SDH physical-layer interfaces, covering medium configuration, path capability, and virtual tributary (VT) objects. It exposes tables for SONET medium type, loopback configuration, timing source, and circuit identifier, plus a path-capability table describing channelization and maximum/minimum path speed, giving both physical-layer and path-layer visibility into optical transport interfaces. This MIB directly supports hardware status monitoring: an administrator can confirm a SONET medium's timing source (internal vs line-derived) to catch clock mismatches, verify loopback is not inadvertently left enabled (which would blackhole traffic), and check path channelization settings against expected service configuration to detect a path provisioned with the wrong capacity. It complements standard SONET-MIB (RFC 3592/2558) concepts for alarms and performance monitoring, implemented here as a Unisphere/ERX-specific extension with additional path-capability detail. It is typically deployed on Unisphere/Juniper ERX edge routers terminating SONET/SDH optical transport circuits. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the Unisphere-Data-SONET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Unisphere-Data-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Unisphere Networks (later Juniper) ERX edge router with SONET/SDH interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll usdSonetMediumTable/usdSonetMediumEntry, checking usdSonetMediumTimingSource to confirm the interface is deriving timing from the network line rather than free-running internally, a common cause of SONET frame slips if misconfigured. Checking usdSonetMediumLoopbackConfig would reveal an interface accidentally left in loopback mode, explaining a circuit that shows physical light but passes no traffic. Reviewing usdSonetPathCapabilityTable's usdSonetPathChannelized, usdSonetPathMaximumChannels, and usdSonetPathMinimumPathSpeed would confirm the path is provisioned with the intended channelization and bandwidth for the service riding on it.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SONET medium type and timing source
  • loopback configuration state
  • circuit identifier
  • path channelization and maximum/minimum channel/path speed
  • virtual tributary (VT) configuration
