What Is Unisphere-Data-SMDS-MIB?

Unisphere-Data-SMDS-MIB is a vendor MIB for Unisphere/Juniper ERX edge routers managing SMDS (Switched Multimegabit Data Service) interfaces, a legacy high-speed WAN service technology. It exposes interface tables for both regular SMDS interfaces and major (physical-layer) SMDS interfaces, each with an index, row-status control, and lower-layer interface index linking them into the standard interface stack. Its monitoring role is primarily configuration/interface-state oriented: confirming which physical and logical SMDS interfaces are provisioned and active, useful for verifying legacy WAN circuit configuration during troubleshooting. It relies on standard interface-stack conventions (ifIndex layering) shared with the IETF IF-MIB, tying SMDS logical interfaces to their underlying physical interfaces. It was deployed on Unisphere/Juniper ERX routers in networks that still carried legacy SMDS WAN circuits, now largely historical, though a Unisphere-Data-SMDS-MIB download is still sought by engineers maintaining legacy ERX deployments or archiving vendor MIB definitions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Unisphere-Data-SMDS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Monitoring Examples

An operator would check usdSmdsIfTable/usdSmdsIfEntry rows, correlating usdSmdsIfIndex with usdSmdsIfLowerIfIndex to confirm a logical SMDS interface is properly stacked on its physical layer, and verify usdSmdsIfRowStatus is active. The parallel usdSmdsMajorIfTable would be checked to confirm the major (physical) SMDS interface itself is provisioned correctly. An interface row present but with usdSmdsIfRowStatus not active would indicate an unprovisioned or disabled SMDS circuit.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using usdSmdsMajorIfStatsInKeepaliveRequests OID:

Select a Juniper/Unisphere ERX edge routing switch with legacy SMDS WAN interface (interface provisioning/row-status status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type usdSmdsMajorIfStatsInKeepaliveRequests into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of keepalive requests received. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
