Organization: IETF Interfaces MIB Working Group

Last Updated: 1994-10-23

Category: Network Interfaces

Description: Defines managed objects for IEEE 802.5 Token Ring interfaces, including interface state, configuration parameters, and ring statistics.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring TOKENRING-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is TOKENRING-MIB?

TOKENRING-MIB is the standard IETF Interfaces MIB Working Group MIB (the dot5/802.5 Token Ring MIB) for IEEE Token Ring entities. Its dot5 table, keyed by ifIndex, records ring-management commands, ring status/state/open-status, ring speed, upstream neighbor, active-monitor participation, functional-address mask, and last-beacon-sent time, while a statistics table records line errors, burst errors, AC (Address Recognized/Copied) errors, abort-transmission errors, internal errors, lost-frame errors, receive congestion, frame-copied errors, token errors, and soft-error counts. As a performance/protocol-status MIB it lets an administrator diagnose Token Ring instability by watching soft-error and beacon activity. It is deployed on network devices with IEEE Token Ring (802.5) interfaces. Engineers can download the TOKENRING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TOKENRING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Network devices with IEEE Token Ring (802.5) interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks dot5StatsSoftErrors and dot5StatsLostFrameErrors to diagnose a degrading Token Ring segment before it triggers a full ring beacon condition.

What Can Be Monitored

  • Token Ring soft-error and beacon activity

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using dot5StatsLineErrors OID:

Select a Network devices with IEEE Token Ring (802.5) interface (ring status/soft-error statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type dot5StatsLineErrors into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a count of Token Ring line errors — frames or tokens copied/repeated with a zero E bit and a non-data or invalid framing condition. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
