Category: Net-SNMP and Linux, Network Interfaces, Routing Protocols
Description: Manages IP protocol configuration, routing tables, and address objects via the FreeBSD bsnmpd agent.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is BEGEMOT-IP-MIB?
BEGEMOT-IP-MIB is part of the Begemot family of MIB modules developed for the FreeBSD bsnmpd SNMP agent, covering IP-layer configuration and state not addressed by the standard IETF IP-MIB. It exposes objects for IP protocol tuning, routing table entries, and address assignment on the host running bsnmpd. Rather than hardware health, this module is used to monitor software-level networking status — IP forwarding behavior, route table contents, and address configuration — on a FreeBSD-based system. It complements and depends on the standard IP-MIB and IF-MIB for baseline interface and IP object definitions, filling gaps FreeBSD's maintainers found missing from those standards. It is typically deployed on FreeBSD routers, firewalls, or network appliances running the bsnmpd daemon for SNMP-based management. Engineers can download the BEGEMOT-IP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in BEGEMOT-IP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- FreeBSD-based router/firewall appliance
- bsnmpd SNMP agent host
Monitoring Examples
Since the sample data only lists the top-level begemotIpObjects container, this module's detailed IP configuration and routing objects live in subordinate branches reachable under that node. An administrator would walk the begemotIpObjects subtree via SNMP to verify FreeBSD-specific IP forwarding settings or route table entries match the intended appliance configuration. Because no finer-grained leaf or table names are provided in the sample, polling a specific counter would require consulting the full MIB tree beneath begemotIpObjects.
What Can Be Monitored
- IP forwarding configuration
- IP routing table entries
- IP address assignments
- FreeBSD-specific IP protocol settings
