Description: Manages Nokia RMD system identity, software version, and operational parameters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is TN-RMD-SYSTEM-MIB?

TN-RMD-SYSTEM-MIB is a Nokia (Tellabs/Nokia transport-network heritage) module that manages system-level identity and discovery data for Remote Managed Devices (RMDs), small managed extension units attached to a host network element. It exposes discovery-related configuration such as VLAN tagging parameters (TPID, VLAN ID, PCP, DEI) used to locate and manage each RMD across the outer/inner VLAN tags of a QinQ transport path, along with per-device attribute counts and discovery mode settings. It is used chiefly for monitoring the software/management status of these remote units - confirming an RMD is discovered and reachable, validating the number of managed attributes it exposes, and verifying its VLAN tagging scheme, rather than raw hardware sensor telemetry. It depends on a companion TN-RMD-TC-MIB for shared textual conventions and likely other TN-RMD-* MIBs for hardware/environmental detail. It is typically deployed in Nokia/Tellabs optical transport or Ethernet access networks where RMDs act as remote, low-cost managed extensions to a central network element. Engineers can download the TN-RMD-SYSTEM-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-RMD-SYSTEM-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nokia/Tellabs Remote Managed Device (RMD)
  • optical/Ethernet access network extension unit

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll tnRmdDiscoverySystemTable (via tnRmdDiscoverySystemEntry) to confirm an RMD has been discovered with the expected tnRmdDiscoveryMcMacAddress, tnRmdDiscoveryMode, and VLAN tagging parameters (tnRmdDiscoveryOuterVlanId, tnRmdDiscoveryInnerVlanId, tnRmdDiscoveryOuterTPID). If a device fails to appear in the table or its tnRmdDiscoveryNumberOfVlanTags/VLAN IDs mismatch expected provisioning, this signals a misconfigured or unreachable remote device. tnRmdSystemAttributeTotal can also be tracked to detect unexpected changes in the set of managed attributes the system exposes.

What Can Be Monitored

  • RMD discovery status
  • management MAC address
  • VLAN tagging configuration (outer/inner VLAN ID, TPID, PCP, DEI)
  • discovery mode
  • number of VLAN tags
  • total system attribute count
