What Is TN-ETHSOAM-MIB?

This MIB module is a Transition Networks (TN) implementation of Ethernet Service OAM (based on ITU-T Y.1731 / IEEE 802.1ag concepts) for carrier Ethernet switches and media converters. It exposes data about maintenance domains, maintenance association end points (MEPs), OAM instance configuration, and continuity-check/alarm status. It is used in monitoring the operational health of Ethernet service connections by tracking MEP status, alarm indications, and per-instance direction/level/mode settings, effectively surfacing connectivity-fault and loss-of-continuity conditions rather than classic CPU/memory metrics. It depends conceptually on the ITU-T Y.1731 and IEEE 802.1ag Ethernet OAM standards that define the maintenance-domain/MEP model it implements in SNMP form. It is typically deployed on Transition Networks managed Ethernet switches and media converters used in carrier and industrial Ethernet networks, where TN-ETHSOAM-MIB SNMP monitoring provides the service-level OAM visibility required to catch connectivity-fault conditions.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in TN-ETHSOAM-MIB. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll the tnEthSoamMPTable (tnEthSoamMPEntry rows) to see each configured maintenance point's tnEthSoamDomaintype, tnEthSoamlevel, tnEthSoamdirection, and tnEthSoamresidencePort. A rising tnEthSoamAlarm or a tnEthSoamStatus change on a given MEP instance indicates a continuity-check failure or misconfigured maintenance level between endpoints. Correlating tnEthSoamFlowInstance and tnEthSoamTaggedVID with the alarm state helps isolate which VLAN/service flow lost end-to-end connectivity.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using tnEthSoamLossStateTxCount OID:

Select a Transition Networks managed Ethernet switch or carrier/industrial media converter (Y.1731/802.1ag MEP/alarm status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type tnEthSoamLossStateTxCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The accumulated Tx frame loss count. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
