Category: Storage

Description: Defines storage management objects for monitoring capacity, allocation, and health of storage subsystems.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is Storage-Management-MIB?

Storage-Management-MIB is a vendor MIB from Siemens Nixdorf Informationssysteme (object prefix "sni") that defines storage management objects for monitoring storage products and their hierarchical storage management (HSM) subsystem. It exposes a storMgmtProductTable listing installed storage-related software products with name, version, operational state, and last-change timestamp, alongside HSM-specific status objects covering operating mode, server task state, and pending job queue depth. Its primary monitoring role is software/service status: confirming a storage product's version and running state, and specifically tracking whether the HSM server task is active and how many jobs are queued/waiting, which flags a stalled or backlogged archival/migration process. It defines its own enterprise-specific ("sni") object tree rather than depending heavily on standard storage MIBs. It would be deployed on Siemens Nixdorf/Fujitsu Siemens storage management software installations handling hierarchical storage management (disk-to-tape/archive migration) tasks. Engineers can download the Storage-Management-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in Storage-Management-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens Nixdorf/Fujitsu Siemens storage management servers (HSM subsystems)

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll storMgmtProductTable/storMgmtProductEntry by storMgmtProductIndex to check storMgmtProductName and storMgmtProductVersion against expected installed software, and storMgmtProductState to confirm the product is running normally. Watching storMgmtHsmsOpmode alongside storMgmtHsmsWaitJobs reveals whether the HSM server task is in an expected operating mode and whether queued jobs are backing up; a rising storMgmtHsmsWaitJobs count with a stalled storMgmtHsmsServertask would indicate the archival/migration process has stopped processing work.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed storage product name/version/state
  • HSM operating mode
  • HSM server task status
  • HSM waiting job queue depth
