Description: Monitors Synology NAS drive S.M.A.R.T. health attributes, status, and predictive failure indicators.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYNOLOGY-SMART-MIB?
SYNOLOGY-SMART-MIB exposes S.M.A.R.T. (Self-Monitoring, Analysis, and Reporting Technology) disk health attributes from Synology Network-Attached Storage appliances, part of Synology's DiskStation/RackStation SNMP MIB family. It surfaces per-disk, per-attribute S.M.A.R.T. data: attribute name/ID, current normalized value, worst recorded value, failure threshold, raw value, and an overall attribute status. This is directly a hardware health monitoring module: it lets an administrator detect predictive drive failure by watching S.M.A.R.T. attributes (such as reallocated sector count or pending sector count) approach their failure thresholds before a disk actually fails, which is critical for maintaining RAID/storage array integrity on a NAS. It mirrors the industry-standard ATA S.M.A.R.T. attribute model rather than any IETF MIB, so its structure depends conceptually on that disk-industry standard even though it is Synology's own SNMP encoding of it. It is deployed on Synology NAS devices in home, SMB, or enterprise backup environments where storage teams monitor drive health to preempt failures. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SYNOLOGY-SMART-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYNOLOGY-SMART-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Synology NAS appliances (DiskStation/RackStation)
Monitoring Examples
An admin would walk synologyDiskSMARTTable/diskSMARTEntry indexed by diskSMARTInfoIndex, reading diskSMARTInfoDevName alongside diskSMARTAttrName and diskSMARTAttrId to identify a specific attribute like reallocated sector count on a specific physical drive. Comparing diskSMARTAttrCurrent and diskSMARTAttrWorst against diskSMARTAttrThreshold reveals whether that attribute is trending toward its failure threshold, while diskSMARTAttrStatus gives an at-a-glance pass/fail/warning verdict. A drive whose diskSMARTAttrStatus flips to a failing state would prompt proactive replacement before data loss occurs.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-disk S.M.A.R.T. attribute values
- S.M.A.R.T. attribute current vs. worst value
- S.M.A.R.T. failure threshold
- raw S.M.A.R.T. attribute data
- overall disk health/attribute status
