Description: Monitors Synology NAS storage space I/O throughput, latency, and volume utilization metrics.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SYNOLOGY-SPACEIO-MIB?
SYNOLOGY-SPACEIO-MIB is a Synology proprietary MIB for Synology NAS (network-attached storage) appliances, exposing per-volume/per-device storage I/O throughput, latency, and load metrics for the DiskStation/RackStation product lines. It provides a space-I/O table keyed by storage device, reporting bytes and operations read and written along with load-average-style figures over multiple time windows. Its monitoring emphasis is on storage subsystem performance and software status: tracking read/write throughput and operation counts, plus load averages over 1/5/15-minute windows, lets an admin spot a volume becoming I/O-bound or overloaded, which often precedes slow file access or degraded RAID rebuild performance. It is a Synology-specific extension used alongside Synology's broader system-health MIBs (covering disk/RAID/temperature/fan status) for full NAS monitoring. It is deployed on Synology NAS units in SMB and home-lab environments where storage performance needs SNMP-based visibility, which is exactly what SYNOLOGY-SPACEIO-MIB SNMP monitoring provides for these devices.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SYNOLOGY-SPACEIO-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Synology NAS appliances (DiskStation/RackStation)
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll spaceIOTable/spaceIOEntry (indexed by spaceIOIndex, identifying the device via spaceIODevice) to read spaceIONRead/spaceIONWritten and spaceIOReads/spaceIOWrites for throughput trends, and spaceIOLA1/spaceIOLA5/spaceIOLA15 to see 1/5/15-minute I/O load averages — a sustained high spaceIOLA15 alongside falling throughput signals the volume is becoming a storage I/O bottleneck. This would prompt investigation into disk health or workload rebalancing before user-facing file access noticeably slows.
What Can Be Monitored
- storage I/O read/write throughput
- read/write operation counts
- 1/5/15-minute I/O load average
- per-volume/device I/O identification
