What Is MELLANOX-IF-VPI-MIB?

MELLANOX-IF-VPI-MIB is a Mellanox Technologies enterprise MIB that manages Virtual Protocol Interconnect (VPI) ports, adapter or switch ports that can operate as either InfiniBand or Ethernet. It exposes per-port InfiniBand physical and logical link state, port GUID, error counters such as symbol errors and transmit-wait time, admin speed, and IB subnet name/prefix. It is used for interface performance and fault monitoring: a port whose logical state fails to reach an active state, or whose symbol-error or transmit-wait counters climb, points to a cabling, subnet-manager, or fabric-congestion problem. It extends the standard IF-MIB interface model with InfiniBand-subnet-specific attributes drawn from the InfiniBand architecture specification. It is deployed in HPC and data center clusters using Mellanox VPI adapters and switches that can flexibly run IB or Ethernet fabrics. Engineers can download the MELLANOX-IF-VPI-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in MELLANOX-IF-VPI-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Mellanox VPI network adapter/switch port

Monitoring Examples

Polling mellanoxIfVPITable by mellanoxIfVPIIndex reads mellanoxIfVPIIbPortPhysicalState and IbPortLogicalState; a port stuck below an active logical state signals a subnet manager or cabling issue. mellanoxIfVPISymbolErrorCounter and mellanoxIfVPIPortXmitWait rising over time indicate physical-layer errors or fabric congestion. mellanoxIfVPISubnetPrefix and SubnetName confirm which IB subnet the port has joined.

What Can Be Monitored

  • IB port physical state
  • IB port logical state
  • symbol error counter
  • port transmit-wait counter
  • port admin speed
  • subnet name/prefix

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using mellanoxIfVPIPortXmitWait OID:

Select a Mellanox VPI network adapter/switch port (InfiniBand/Ethernet dual-mode) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type mellanoxIfVPIPortXmitWait into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports a VPI counter. The number of ticks during which the port selected by PortSelect had data to transmit but no data was sent during the entire tick either because of insufficient credits or because of lack of arbitration. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter64-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
