Description: IETF ISMS working group MIB for discovering SNMP agents that support the Secure Shell Security Model (SSHSM), applicable to any SNMPv3-managed network device
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SSHSM-DISCOVERY-MIB?
SSHSM-DISCOVERY-MIB is a vendor-neutral IETF MIB from the ISMS working group defining a mechanism for SNMP management stations to discover agents that support the Secure Shell Security Model (SSHSM) for SNMPv3. It is a discovery/capability-signaling module rather than one exposing device operational data, so it does not cover hardware sensors, interfaces, or performance counters. Its only monitoring-adjacent role is to let a manager determine whether a given SNMP agent can be secured/accessed via SSH-based transport security, which is a security-configuration concern rather than a hardware/software health one. It is explicitly an IETF standards-track module (part of an RFC, per its description text) and depends on the broader SNMPv3/USM and Secure Shell Transport Model framework rather than any vendor-specific extension. It would be relevant to any SNMPv3-managed network device that supports SSH transport security, evaluated by management platforms during agent discovery/capability negotiation rather than routine monitoring. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SSHSM-DISCOVERY-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SSHSM-DISCOVERY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- any SNMPv3-capable network device supporting SSH transport security
Monitoring Examples
This module defines discovery/capability objects rather than runtime data tables with populated sample objects, so no concrete monitoring scenario with real object names can be honestly constructed; in practice a manager would query it once during agent discovery to learn whether SSHSM is supported before establishing a secured session.
