Description: Defines the enterprise OID structure and common management objects for Sony network-attached devices.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is SONY-MIB?
SONY-MIB is Sony's enterprise-root MIB defining the base OID tree and common system identification objects for Sony network-attached devices, historically including network cameras, broadcast equipment, and embedded network appliances built on a BSD-derived network stack. It exposes basic system identity data (machine ID, domain name, host name, firmware/version name) as well as low-level BSD network memory buffer (mbuf) statistics used by the device's TCP/IP stack. Although it lacks classic environmental sensors, it does support software/firmware status monitoring via the version object and stack health monitoring via mbuf allocation, free-cluster, drop, wait, and drain counters, which reveal memory-buffer exhaustion or networking stack stress on the device. It is a self-contained enterprise MIB with no strong dependency on other standard MIBs beyond conventional SNMPv2-SMI enterprise numbering. It is typically deployed for basic identification and low-level diagnostic polling of Sony network appliances in broadcast, surveillance, or embedded networking environments. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SONY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SONY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Sony network-attached devices (e.g., network cameras, broadcast/embedded appliances)
Monitoring Examples
An admin would poll sonyHostName, sonyDomainName, and sonyVerName to confirm device identity and firmware version during an inventory audit, then watch mbufFreeClusters alongside mbufDrops and mbufWaits to detect network buffer exhaustion; a rising mbufDrops count together with falling mbufFreeClusters would indicate the device's network stack is running low on buffer memory and dropping packets under load.
What Can Be Monitored
- device host name and domain name
- firmware/software version
- mbuf buffer allocation and free clusters
- mbuf drops and waits (stack stress indicator)
