All MIBs › SNMP-MIB

Organization: Nortel Networks

Last Updated: 1999-04-23

Category: SNMP Infrastructure and Standards

Description: Manages Nortel SNMP agent configuration, community access controls, and trap destination settings.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNMP-MIB?

This SNMP-MIB is a Nortel enterprise MIB that manages the device's own SNMP agent — configuring community-based access, trap-receiver destinations, and related agent behavior — rather than describing external network hardware. It belongs to the network-management/SNMP-infrastructure category and exposes configuration data: agent type, an RMON-support flag, the source address used for outgoing SNMP traffic, and a table of configured trap receivers with address, community string, and row status. Its role in monitoring hardware/software status is foundational rather than direct: it governs which management stations receive fault/event traps and confirms the device's SNMP agent is correctly configured and RMON-capable, which underpins all other SNMP-based hardware/software monitoring on the device. It parallels standard SNMPv2-MIB/SNMP-COMMUNITY-MIB concepts with Nortel-specific naming. It is typically deployed on Nortel/Avaya switches and routers as part of baseline network-management configuration. Engineers can download the SNMP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Avaya switch or router

Monitoring Examples

An operator reviews the nnsnmpTrapRcvrTable, indexed by nnsnmpTrapRcvrIndex, to confirm each configured nnsnmpTrapRcvrAddress and nnsnmpTrapRcvrCommunity pairing is correct and that nnsnmpTrapRcvrEntryStatus shows the row active, ensuring fault traps actually reach the intended NMS. Checking nnsnmpRmonSupported confirms whether the agent exposes RMON statistics, and nnsnmpSourceAddress reveals which interface address the device uses when originating SNMP traffic, useful when troubleshooting traps appearing from an unexpected source IP.

What Can Be Monitored

  • trap receiver address/community table
  • trap receiver row status (active/inactive)
  • RMON support flag
  • SNMP source address
  • agent type
