Category: SNMP Infrastructure and Standards

Description: Defines SNMP HMSA hash-based message authentication objects for cryptographic integrity verification.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNMP-HMSA-MIB?

SNMP-HMSA-MIB defines objects related to HMAC-based (hash-based) message authentication used for cryptographic integrity verification within an SNMP security context. Rather than exposing operational hardware or performance data, it is a security/protocol-support MIB dealing with authentication parameters for message integrity checking. Its role in status monitoring is limited to the management plane: verifying that message-authentication mechanisms are correctly configured, rather than reporting on device uptime, temperature, or resource load. It is tightly coupled to the SNMPv3 User-based Security Model (USM) and related SNMP framework MIBs (SNMP-FRAMEWORK-MIB, SNMP-USER-BASED-SM-MIB), on which its authentication constructs depend. It would be used wherever SNMP agents need HMAC-based authentication configured and verified, typically in security-conscious network management deployments. Engineers can download the SNMP-HMSA-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-HMSA-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Tandem/HP NonStop server systems (Host Resources Subagent: storage/device/CPU/network/printer/disk tables)

Monitoring Examples

No sample objects were provided for this module, so a concrete polling example cannot be given; conceptually an admin would inspect HMAC authentication-parameter objects to confirm the correct hash algorithm and key configuration are active on an SNMP agent. Since no runtime data objects were supplied, no monitoring scenario beyond authentication-configuration verification can be honestly described.

What Can Be Monitored

  • HMAC authentication algorithm configuration
  • message-integrity key parameters
  • SNMPv3 security configuration status
