Category: SNMP Infrastructure and Standards

Description: Defines SNMP Research implementation-specific objects for agent configuration and diagnostic information.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNMP-RESEARCH-MIB?

SNMP-RESEARCH-MIB is a vendor-specific enterprise MIB published by SNMP Research, a long-standing SNMP agent software vendor, to expose implementation details of its own agent product line rather than a piece of network hardware. It defines an object tree distinguishing the general agent, a UNIX-specific agent variant, the snmpd daemon process, and a proxy agent component, giving each a distinct identity for reporting and configuration purposes. In monitoring terms it is used to confirm software identity and status -- essentially which SNMP Research agent process (native agent, UNIX daemon, or proxy) is running and responding -- functioning as a software version/presence indicator embedded in the agent itself rather than a hardware sensor feed. As an implementation-identity MIB it has no dependency on other MIBs beyond the base SNMPv2-SMI structure. It typically appears embedded inside third-party network devices or UNIX hosts that license SNMP Research's agent toolkit as their underlying SNMP stack. Engineers implementing or auditing this functionality typically reference the SNMP-RESEARCH-MIB RFC/standard documentation for the authoritative specification.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNMP-RESEARCH-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Devices/hosts embedding SNMP Research's licensed SNMP agent stack
  • UNIX hosts running the SNMP Research daemon

Monitoring Examples

A management station polling this MIB is primarily confirming presence and identity rather than performance: the existence and reachability of the snmpResearchAgent, snmpResearchUNIXAgent, or snmpResearchSnmpd branches under snmpResearchNode tells an operator which SNMP Research agent variant is running on a given host or embedded device. If the proxy agent branch (snmpResearchProxyAgent) is reachable but the expected UNIX agent branch is not, that would indicate the device is being managed only through a proxy layer rather than a native agent, which matters for troubleshooting SNMP timeouts.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SNMP agent variant/identity
  • UNIX agent presence
  • snmpd daemon status
  • proxy agent presence
