Category: Network Performance Monitoring, Server and Host Management

Description: Monitors Siemens Nixdorf BS2 mainframe system performance counters, throughput, and resource utilization.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is SNIBS2PERF-MIB?

SNIBS2PERF-MIB is a vendor MIB from Siemens Nixdorf for performance monitoring of BS2000/OSD mainframe systems (referred to internally as BS2), sitting under the broader sniSar (System Activity Reporting) product tree. It exposes performance sampling controls (interval, sampling cycle) and basic system statistics such as sampling status, elapsed sample time, maximum logged machines, VM2000 virtualization status, and I/O timing/activity metrics. Its purpose is heavily performance- and status-oriented: administrators use it to track mainframe resource utilization, sampling health (sm2Status, sm2BasicStatus), I/O subsystem activity (sm2TimeIOStatus, sm2TimeIOActMach), and virtualization layer (VM2000) status to spot throughput bottlenecks or degraded performance. It is a standalone Siemens product MIB (under the sni/sniProductMibs branch) without dependency on external standard MIBs. It is deployed specifically in Siemens Nixdorf/Fujitsu BS2000 mainframe environments, polled by performance-monitoring or capacity-planning tools. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the SNIBS2PERF-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in SNIBS2PERF-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Siemens Nixdorf/Fujitsu BS2000 mainframe system

Monitoring Examples

A capacity planner would poll sm2BasicStatus and sm2BasicSamples to confirm the performance sampling subsystem is actively collecting data over the configured sm2Interval and sm2SamplingCycle. Checking sm2BasicMaxLogMach and sm2BasicVM2000 reveals how many logical machines are running under VM2000 virtualization, useful for capacity trending. A stalled sm2TimeIOStatus or an unexpectedly low sm2TimeIOActMach count would indicate an I/O bottleneck or a machine that has stopped reporting activity, warranting investigation into mainframe workload distribution.

What Can Be Monitored

  • performance sampling status/interval
  • system I/O activity
  • logged machine count
  • VM2000 virtualization status
  • sampling cycle configuration
