What Is SCSI-MIB?

SCSI-MIB is an IETF standards-based module (RFC 4455) for managing Small Computer System Interface (SCSI) subsystems independent of the underlying transport or interconnect layer, applicable to storage controllers, HBAs, and SCSI target/initiator devices. It exposes data organized around SCSI instances, devices, ports, and logical units, covering identification, aliasing, and vendor/software version information for each SCSI entity. It is used to monitor the software status of SCSI stack instances (via scsiInstSoftwareIndex and scsiInstVendorVersion), track storage type classification, and detect fault conditions through SCSI notification objects, making it valuable for spotting misconfigured or failing SCSI adapters and storage paths. Because it is transport-independent, it is commonly layered alongside Fibre Channel or iSCSI MIBs that describe the underlying physical connection while SCSI-MIB describes the logical SCSI layer. It is typically deployed on storage servers, SAN host bus adapters, and RAID/storage array controllers where administrators need vendor-neutral visibility into SCSI-level health and identity. Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll scsiInstanceTable (indexed by scsiInstIndex) to enumerate each SCSI protocol stack instance on a host, reading scsiInstAlias and scsiInstVendorVersion to confirm expected driver/firmware versions are running. Walking scsiDeviceTable/scsiDeviceEntry (scsiDeviceIndex, scsiDeviceAlias) reveals attached SCSI devices per instance; an unexpected drop in device count signals a disconnected drive or failed HBA port. Enabling scsiInstScsiNotificationsEnable lets the instance emit scsiNotifications traps when device state changes occur, so the admin is alerted rather than relying on polling alone.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using scsiPortBusyStatuses OID:

Select a device implementing SCSI-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type scsiPortBusyStatuses into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object represents the number of port busy statuses sent or received by this port. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
