Category: Avaya BayStack Ethernet Management

Description: Provides common traffic and performance statistics objects for Nortel/Avaya BayStack devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is S5-COMMON-STATS-MIB?

S5-COMMON-STATS-MIB is a Nortel/Avaya (Synoptics/Bay Networks 'S5' series, i.e. BayStack/Centillion) MIB providing common node-level and forwarding statistics shared across that switch family's chassis-based products. It exposes per-node tables keyed by interface/board/port index recording MAC address and status for nodes learned on switched ports, as well as separate forwarding-node tables and general statistics counters. Its monitoring value is primarily traffic/forwarding visibility and port-level status -- confirming which MAC addresses are learned on which board/port combination and whether a node's status is healthy -- functioning as a traffic/performance-counter MIB for the switch's address table and forwarding behavior rather than environmental sensors. It is part of Nortel's proprietary 'S5' (BayStack) MIB family and is typically used alongside other S5-series chassis and interface MIBs for full device coverage. It is deployed on legacy Nortel/Avaya BayStack and Centillion switching platforms in enterprise LAN environments, where administrators often browse its tables through an S5-COMMON-STATS-MIB MIB Browser view to correlate node and forwarding entries across chassis slots.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in S5-COMMON-STATS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Avaya BayStack switch
  • Nortel Centillion switching platform

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll s5CmSNodeTable / s5CmSNodeEntry rows, indexed by s5CmSNodeIfIndx, s5CmSNodeBrdIndx, and s5CmSNodePortIndx, to look up s5CmSNodeMacAddr and s5CmSNodeStatus for a given switch port -- an unexpected status value could indicate a port learning issue or MAC address conflict. Similarly, s5CmFNodeTable / s5CmFNodeEntry entries keyed by s5CmFNodeIfIndx would be checked against s5CmFNodeMacAddr to confirm the forwarding table reflects the expected set of learned addresses on that interface.

What Can Be Monitored

  • learned MAC addresses per board/port
  • node status per port
  • forwarding table entries
  • per-interface node statistics
