Description: Monitors Nortel BayStack Ethernet multi-segment topology discovery and connectivity.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is S5-ETH-MULTISEG-TOPOLOGY-MIB?

S5-ETH-MULTISEG-TOPOLOGY-MIB is a Nortel (BayStack 5000 series) vendor MIB covering Ethernet multi-segment topology discovery, used to track network management module (NMM) and bridge connectivity across segmented Ethernet networks in Nortel chassis-based switches. It exposes topology status objects such as the IP address and status of discovered topology agents, timestamps of the last NMM and bridge topology change, and counts/tables of currently and maximally known NMMs and bridges per slot/port. Administrators use it to monitor the software/network status of topology discovery — tracking how many management modules and bridges are visible and detecting topology change events that could indicate a link failure, a device being added/removed, or a segmentation fault in the multi-segment Ethernet fabric. As a Nortel S5000-series enterprise MIB, it operates alongside Nortel's broader S5-series chassis and bridge MIBs for full switch management context. It is typically deployed in legacy Nortel BayStack/5000-series chassis switch environments for network topology and connectivity monitoring. Engineers can download the S5-ETH-MULTISEG-TOPOLOGY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in S5-ETH-MULTISEG-TOPOLOGY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel BayStack 5000-series Ethernet chassis switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll s5EnMsTopNmmCurNum and s5EnMsTopBdgCurNum against their maximum counterparts (s5EnMsTopNmmMaxNum, s5EnMsTopBdgMaxNum) to see how many network management modules and bridges are currently discovered versus the maximum ever seen, and would check s5EnMsTopNmmLstChg/s5EnMsTopBdgLstChg timestamps to spot recent topology changes. The s5EnMsTopNmmTable, indexed via s5EnMsTopNmmSlot and s5EnMsTopNmmPort, would be walked to locate exactly which slot/port lost or gained a topology neighbor, revealing a link flap or module failure. These objects are drawn directly from the sample objects provided for this MIB.
