What Is RSERPOOL-MIB?

RSERPOOL-MIB is an IETF standards-track MIB module for managing implementations of Reliable Server Pooling (RSerPool), a protocol framework for grouping redundant servers into pools for high-availability, load-distributed services. It exposes data about ENRP (Endpoint Handlespace Redundancy Protocol) name servers, pool elements, and pool users, including server identity, operational scope, and reachability information. This makes it useful for monitoring the software/service-level health of an RSerPool deployment, notably tracking rserpoolENRPUptime for individual ENRP servers, plus their announce ports and addresses, to detect a name server that has restarted or become unreachable. Because it manages a specific IETF transport-layer redundancy protocol, it is closely tied to the ENRP/ASAP protocol specifications and SCTP-based transport, rather than to any single vendor's hardware. It is typically deployed in telecom/carrier-grade signaling infrastructure (e.g., SCTP-based server pools for VoIP/SS7-over-IP applications) where high availability of pooled servers must be tracked, per the RSERPOOL-MIB RFC that defines this module.

Monitoring Examples

A network manager would walk rserpoolENRPTable/rserpoolENRPEntry to enumerate active ENRP servers by rserpoolENRPIndex, checking rserpoolENRPUptime to confirm each server has been continuously available and rserpoolENRPIdentifier/rserpoolENRPDescription to identify which instance is being examined. Polling rserpoolENRPASAPAnnouncePort, rserpoolENRPASAPAnnounceAddrType and rserpoolENRPASAPAnnounceAddr alongside rserpoolENRPENRPAnnouncePort would reveal whether a server's announcement endpoints are correctly configured; a server whose uptime resets unexpectedly signals a crash or restart of the redundancy service.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rserpoolENRPUptime OID:

Select a device implementing RSERPOOL-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rserpoolENRPUptime into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The ENRP service uptime of this ENRP server. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a TimeTicks-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value is unexpectedly low (e.g. under 10 minutes), since that indicates a recent, possibly unplanned, reboot or restart. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
