Description: Nortel Contact Center application MIB monitoring resiliency and high-availability status including shadowing mode, switchover events, and server state for Nortel CC deployments

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RR-NORTEL?

RR-NORTEL is a Nortel (later Avaya) Contact Center application MIB reporting on the resiliency/high-availability subsystem of Contact Center servers. It exposes status data on shadowing (data replication) between primary and backup servers, switchover events, running/shadowing state, and overall resiliency mode, plus campus (geographically distributed) setup detection. Its central purpose is monitoring software/service health of the Contact Center HA pair -- whether the shadowing service is enabled and running, whether a switchover has occurred or is armed, and the current operational mode of each node -- functioning as a software/process status MIB rather than a hardware sensor MIB. It is specific to Nortel/Avaya's proprietary Contact Center application namespace and does not appear to build on a standard IETF MIB. It is typically deployed by contact center administrators monitoring the redundancy and failover posture of a Nortel/Avaya CC server pair to ensure business continuity. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RR-NORTEL file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RR-NORTEL. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Avaya Contact Center server

Monitoring Examples

A monitoring system would poll nortelResiliencyStatus and nortelIsRunning to confirm the resiliency subsystem is active, and nortelIsShadowing together with nortelShadowingServiceEnabled to verify the backup server is actively receiving replicated data from the primary named in nortelServerName. If nortelSwitchoverOccurred flips unexpectedly while nortelSwitchoverEnabled is true, that signals an unplanned failover event requiring investigation; nortelMode and nortelStatus report the resulting operational state of each server after the event.

What Can Be Monitored

  • resiliency subsystem status
  • shadowing enabled/running state
  • server mode (active/standby)
  • switchover occurrence and enablement
  • server name/identity
  • campus HA setup detection

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using nortelIsRunning OID:

Select a Nortel/Avaya Contact Center server (HA shadowing/switchover resiliency status) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type nortelIsRunning into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the whether the process is currently running. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an Integer32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the value drifts significantly from its normal baseline, since an unexpected change often points to a real underlying issue. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
