Description: IETF AVT Working Group MIB for RTCP Extended Reports (RFC 3611), tracking per-session VoIP quality metrics such as jitter, packet loss, and delay for RTP/RTCP endpoints
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RTCPXR-MIB?
RTCPXR-MIB is an IETF AVT (Audio/Video Transport) Working Group standards MIB implementing RTCP Extended Reports (RTCP XR) per RFC 3611, specifically the VoIP metrics report block used to convey call-quality statistics for RTP/RTCP-based voice sessions. It exposes a per-call table of VoIP quality-of-service metrics including call identification and endpoint addressing, codec/vocoder type, call duration, and network-level loss/discard statistics. It is used to monitor the software/service-level quality of active or recent VoIP calls rather than hardware vitals: rtcpXrVoipNetworkLossRate, rtcpXrVoipAverageDiscardRate, rtcpXrVoipBurstLossDensity, and rtcpXrVoipBurstLenMs reveal packet loss and burst-loss patterns that directly correlate with audible call-quality degradation, letting an administrator distinguish a healthy call from one suffering network impairment. It explicitly implements the VoIP Metrics report block defined in RFC 3611 Section 4.7 and is meant to be used alongside standard RTP/RTCP session and codec information rather than as a standalone protocol. It would be deployed on VoIP endpoints, gateways, or session border controllers/monitoring probes in IP telephony networks to track per-call voice quality, implementing the RTCPXR-MIB RFC 3611 VoIP metrics report block for that purpose.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RTCPXR-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- VoIP endpoints, gateways, and session border controllers/monitoring probes
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll rtcpXrVoipTable/rtcpXrVoipEntry (indexed by rtcpXrVoipIndex) for a given rtcpXrVoipCallIdentifier, checking rtcpXrVoipSourceIPaddress/rtcpXrVoipSourcePort and rtcpXrVoipVocoderType alongside rtcpXrVoipNetworkLossRate and rtcpXrVoipBurstLossDensity; a call showing a high burst loss density and elevated rtcpXrVoipAverageDiscardRate over its rtcpXrVoipCallDurationMs would indicate the kind of bursty packet loss that produces audible choppy audio for that VoIP call.
What Can Be Monitored
- per-call network loss rate
- average discard rate
- burst loss density
- burst length (ms)
- call duration
- vocoder/codec type
