Description: Monitors BIND DNS resolver cache statistics and query counters from ISC.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is ISC-CACHE?
ISC-CACHE is a stub/minimal MIB associated with ISC BIND, intended to expose DNS resolver cache configuration and statistics for a BIND-based name server. Given its stub nature, it defines only a small set of cache-related configuration objects rather than a full statistics suite. Its monitoring relevance is software/service-level: confirming the DNS caching resolver's configuration (such as a named cache instance) is present and correctly identified, which is a first step toward tracking DNS service health and cache performance. It is tied conceptually to BIND/ISC DNS software rather than any hardware MIB, and typically would be supplemented by BIND's own statistics-channel or vendor-specific extensions for deeper query counters. Deployment context is any server running ISC BIND as a caching DNS resolver. Engineers can download the ISC-CACHE file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in ISC-CACHE. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- server running ISC BIND DNS software
Monitoring Examples
The source module description explicitly calls this a stub containing only DNS cache configuration objects, so it should not be assumed to expose a full statistics table beyond what's listed. An administrator would check cacheCfgName to confirm which named cache instance is being reported on a BIND server, using it as an identity check rather than a source of live performance counters. Deeper query-rate or cache-hit statistics would need to come from BIND's own extended statistics interfaces, not from this stub MIB.
What Can Be Monitored
