Category: Riverstone Networks, Traps / Notifications

Description: Defines SNMP notification objects and trap events for Riverstone Networks RS router platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RIVERSTONE-NOTIFICATIONS-MIB?

RIVERSTONE-NOTIFICATIONS-MIB is a vendor-specific SNMP module from Riverstone Networks (later absorbed into Alcatel-Lucent's product line) that centralizes the SNMP trap/notification definitions for Riverstone RS-series routers and switches. It exposes categories of data tied to system events: environmental alarms and syslog-to-SNMP mapping events, along with general enterprise notification controls, rather than continuously polled counters. Its principal monitoring value is fault and status alerting — it lets an operator learn in near real time about environmental conditions (via rsEnvNotifications) and about internally logged syslog conditions translated into SNMP traps, giving hardware/software health visibility through event-driven notifications rather than gauges. It depends on the Riverstone enterprise MIB tree and on standard SNMPv2-CONF notification-type conventions for defining its trap objects. It is typically deployed on Riverstone/Alcatel RS routers in enterprise or carrier networks where a central NMS subscribes to these traps for automated alerting. Engineers can download the RIVERSTONE-NOTIFICATIONS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIVERSTONE-NOTIFICATIONS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Riverstone Networks RS-series router/switch

Monitoring Examples

A network management station would register to receive traps from rsEnvNotificationGroup and rsSyslog2SNMPMapNotifications, using accompanying objects like rsS2SModuleId, rsS2SSeverity, and rsS2SMessage to determine which module raised the condition and how severe it is. If a Riverstone chassis logs a syslog message about a failing power supply, the rsSyslog2SNMPMapGroup mechanism converts it into an SNMP trap carrying a critical rsS2SSeverity and a descriptive rsS2SMessage, alerting the NMS without active polling. The rsNotificationControl object lets administrators enable or disable categories of these traps.

What Can Be Monitored

  • environmental alarm notifications
  • syslog-to-SNMP mapped events
  • notification severity level
