Description: Monitors interface and system capacity utilization thresholds on Riverstone Networks RS routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RIVERSTONE-CAPACITY-MIB?

RIVERSTONE-CAPACITY-MIB is a vendor MIB for Riverstone Networks (later acquired by Alcatel-Lucent/Enterasys lineage) RS-series routing switches, focused on system resource capacity reporting. It exposes categories of data related to internal resource utilization and capacity thresholds, such as how much of a fixed hardware capacity (e.g. routing table entries, forwarding resources) is currently consumed. This is squarely a hardware/software status MIB: it lets an administrator monitor whether the device is approaching a resource ceiling that could degrade routing or forwarding performance, an early-warning signal distinct from simple interface traffic counters. Being a conformance-oriented capacity module, it likely builds on the standard SNMPv2-CONF compliance framework used across Riverstone's MIB family. It would be deployed in ISP or enterprise core/edge network monitoring where RS routers are polled to catch capacity exhaustion before it causes outages. Engineers can download the RIVERSTONE-CAPACITY-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RIVERSTONE-CAPACITY-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Riverstone Networks RS-series routers/switches

Monitoring Examples

The module defines conformance groups rsCapCompliances and rsCapGroups, which describe compliance requirements for the actual capacity objects (not themselves data-bearing). A monitoring station would typically poll the associated capacity utilization objects that these groups reference to track how close a Riverstone RS router is to hitting a hardware resource limit, alerting before routes or sessions start failing. Without the underlying leaf-object names visible here, the concrete data objects are inferred from the compliance/group structure typical of Riverstone MIBs.

What Can Be Monitored

  • system resource capacity utilization
  • capacity threshold compliance
