Description: Manages SONET physical layer path and section parameters on Redstone Communications routers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is REDSTONE-SONET-MIB?

REDSTONE-SONET-MIB is a vendor-specific enterprise MIB from Redstone Communications for managing SONET (Synchronous Optical Networking) physical-layer parameters on their routers. It exposes SONET medium configuration and identity data, including medium type, loopback mode, timing source selection, and circuit identifier, per physical port. For hardware status monitoring, administrators use it to confirm a SONET interface's medium type and timing source are correctly provisioned and that it isn't inadvertently stuck in a loopback test mode, both of which directly affect whether the optical circuit passes traffic. It complements standard interface-status conventions (akin to IF-MIB/SONET-MIB) though implemented as a private Redstone schema rather than direct reuse of the IETF SONET MIB. It's typically deployed in telecom/carrier network environments on Redstone Communications routers terminating SONET optical transport circuits. Engineers can download the REDSTONE-SONET-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in REDSTONE-SONET-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redstone Communications router
  • SONET/optical transport equipment

Monitoring Examples

An admin polls rsSonetMediumTable/rsSonetMediumEntry for rsSonetMediumType and rsSonetMediumTimingSource on a given SONET port to confirm it's set for the expected line vs. internal timing. rsSonetMediumLoopbackConfig reveals whether a port has been left in a loopback test mode, which would explain an otherwise-unexplained circuit outage. rsSonetMediumCircuitIdentifier lets an operator cross-reference the SNMP-visible port with the carrier's circuit ID during troubleshooting calls.

What Can Be Monitored

  • SONET medium type
  • loopback configuration
  • timing source
  • circuit identifier
