Category: Wireless LAN

Description: Monitors wireless client session state, authentication status, and roaming history on Enterasys RoamAbout WLAN controllers.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB?

RBTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB is an Enterasys (RoamAbout) wireless LAN controller/access-controller MIB that tracks individual wireless client sessions across a controller-managed access-point deployment. It exposes per-client session data including MAC address, session ID, username, IP address, encryption type, VLAN assignment, and the serving access point's serial number and radio number, plus access type and authentication method used. This directly supports monitoring software-level operational status of the wireless service: administrators can see which clients are currently associated, how they authenticated, and which physical AP/radio they roamed to, revealing authentication failures, encryption mismatches, or unexpected roaming behavior. It is Enterasys enterprise-specific and layered on top of standard 802.11 wireless client/authentication concepts rather than an IETF wireless MIB. It is deployed on Enterasys/Extreme Networks wireless access controllers managing fleets of access points in enterprise WLAN deployments, where RBTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB SNMP monitoring helps administrators track per-client authentication and roaming behavior.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBTWS-CLIENT-SESSION-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Enterasys RoamAbout wireless access controller
  • Enterasys/Extreme Networks WLAN

Monitoring Examples

An operator polls rbtwsClSessClientSessionTable/rbtwsClSessClientSessionEntry keyed by rbtwsClSessClientSessSessionId to see, for each connected client, rbtwsClSessClientSessMacAddress, rbtwsClSessClientSessUsername, and rbtwsClSessClientSessIpAddress. rbtwsClSessClientSessApSerialNum and rbtwsClSessClientSessRadioNum reveal which access point and radio a client is currently attached to, letting an admin detect abnormal roaming or overloaded APs, while rbtwsClSessClientSessEncryptionType and rbtwsClSessClientSessAuthMethod flag clients using weaker security than policy requires.

What Can Be Monitored

  • connected client sessions
  • client MAC/IP/username
  • serving AP and radio
  • encryption type per session
  • authentication method
  • VLAN assignment
