Description: Provides extended ATM AAL5 virtual channel link (VCL) performance statistics on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-X-AAL5-VCL-STAT-MIB?

RBN-X-AAL5-VCL-STAT-MIB is a Redback Networks (now Ericsson) enterprise MIB deployed on SmartEdge multi-service edge routers and BRAS platforms, providing extended performance statistics for ATM AAL5 virtual channel links (VCLs). It exposes packet- and octet-level traffic counters per VCL, mirroring the direction the IETF atommib working group was taking with the ATM2-MIB's atmAal5VclStatTable, positioned here as an experimental/vendor placeholder ahead of standardization. As a pure statistics MIB, it is primarily useful for performance monitoring rather than hardware/environmental health -- operators use it to verify ATM VCL throughput and detect traffic anomalies such as stalled or congested circuits, though it does not cover CPU, memory, temperature, or power status. It explicitly depends on/mirrors the IETF ATM2-MIB draft (draft-ietf-atommib-atm2-XX.txt) and is expected to be obsoleted once that standard is finalized. It is used in service-provider ATM access networks running Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge platforms that terminate AAL5-encapsulated ATM circuits, often for legacy DSL/ATM broadband aggregation. Network engineers evaluating or troubleshooting this functionality can download the RBN-X-AAL5-VCL-STAT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-X-AAL5-VCL-STAT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS with ATM interfaces

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll rbnXAtmAal5VclStatTable (rbnXAtmAal5VclStatEntry) for rbnXAtmAal5VclInPkts, rbnXAtmAal5VclOutPkts, rbnXAtmAal5VclInOctets, and rbnXAtmAal5VclOutOctets on a per-VCL basis to baseline normal traffic levels on a subscriber's ATM circuit. A sudden drop in rbnXAtmAal5VclInPkts/OutPkts while the underlying interface remains up would indicate a stalled AAL5 session or misconfigured VCL, prompting further investigation into the ATM PVC. Comparing octet counts across VCLs also helps identify circuits nearing their provisioned bandwidth.

What Can Be Monitored

  • AAL5 VCL inbound/outbound packet counts
  • AAL5 VCL inbound/outbound octet counts
  • per-VCL ATM traffic statistics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnXAtmAal5VclInPkts OID:

Select a Redback/Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS with ATM interface (AAL5 VCL traffic statistics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnXAtmAal5VclInPkts into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of AAL5 CPCS PDUs received on the AAL5 VCC at the interface identified by the ifIndex. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
