Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is CENTILLION-DOT3-EXTENSIONS-MIB?

CENTILLION-DOT3-EXTENSIONS-MIB is a vendor-specific MIB from Nortel (originally Bay Networks) Centillion ATM/LAN switches, extending IEEE 802.3 (Ethernet) interface management beyond what the standard EtherLike-MIB provides. It exposes a table (cnDot3ExtnTable/cnDot3ExtnEntry) of per-interface Ethernet extension attributes, including administrative and operational speed (cnDot3ExtnIfAdminSpeed/cnDot3ExtnIfOperSpeed) and administrative/operational connection type (cnDot3ExtnIfAdminConnectionType/cnDot3ExtnIfOperConnectionType). Its monitoring value is centered on hardware/interface status: comparing admin versus operational speed and connection type reveals auto-negotiation mismatches or a port that has fallen back to a lower speed or different duplex/connection mode than configured. As an extension module, it clearly depends on the standard IETF EtherLike-MIB and IF-MIB for base interface indexing (ifIndex) and Ethernet statistics. It is deployed on Nortel/Bay Networks Centillion switch modules in legacy enterprise LAN/ATM edge environments. Engineers can download the CENTILLION-DOT3-EXTENSIONS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CENTILLION-DOT3-EXTENSIONS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Nortel/Bay Networks Centillion switch

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll cnDot3ExtnTable/cnDot3ExtnEntry, indexed by cnDot3ExtnIfIndex, and compare cnDot3ExtnIfAdminSpeed against cnDot3ExtnIfOperSpeed to detect a port that negotiated a lower speed than intended, indicating a cabling or NIC compatibility issue. Similarly, comparing cnDot3ExtnIfAdminConnectionType to cnDot3ExtnIfOperConnectionType would reveal whether a port fell back to half-duplex or a different connection mode than configured, a common cause of intermittent packet loss on legacy Ethernet links.

What Can Be Monitored

  • interface administrative vs operational speed
  • interface administrative vs operational connection type
