Description: Manages L2TP tunnel and session configuration, statistics, and status on Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-L2TP-MIB?

RBN-L2TP-MIB is a Redback Networks (SmartEdge BRAS platform) module for monitoring and configuring L2TP (Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol) tunnels and peers, used heavily in broadband remote access server deployments for tunneling subscriber PPP sessions. It exposes peer configuration data (media type, vendor, revision, hostname, RADIUS association, IP addressing) as well as tunnel/session counters and state-change tracking, all scoped per SNMP context as the description notes. Its monitoring role centers on the operational status of L2TP tunnels and peers rather than device hardware, letting an operator see whether a given LNS/LAC peer relationship is up, how it's configured, and when its state changes; this is effectively a software/protocol-service status view for the L2TP tunneling service. It depends on the surrounding SmartEdge subscriber-management and PPP MIB context, and tunnels are keyed per SNMP community/context as called out in the description. It's deployed by ISPs and carriers running Redback SmartEdge BRAS equipment to terminate DSL/broadband subscriber tunnels. Engineers can download the RBN-L2TP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-L2TP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Redback SmartEdge BRAS platforms

Monitoring Examples

An operator would poll rbnL2tpPeerCfgTable/rbnL2tpPeerCfgEntry, keyed by rbnL2tpMibPeerName, to inspect rbnL2tpPCfgVendor, rbnL2tpPCfgRev, and rbnL2tpPCfgHostName for a remote LNS/LAC peer, confirming interoperability details. rbnL2tpPCfgRemIPAddType/rbnL2tpPCfgRemIPAdd and rbnL2tpPCfgLocalIPAddType would be checked to verify tunnel endpoint addressing is correct, and rbnL2tpPCfgRadius/rbnL2tpPCfgStatic would show whether the peer was learned dynamically via RADIUS or configured statically -- a mismatch here often explains why a subscriber's L2TP tunnel fails to establish.

What Can Be Monitored

  • L2TP peer configuration (vendor, revision, hostname)
  • tunnel local/remote IP addressing
  • RADIUS vs static peer origin
  • tunnel/session state changes
  • L2TP tunnel and session counters

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnL2tpPCfgCtlRetranCnt OID:

Select a Redback SmartEdge BRAS platform (L2TP tunnel/peer monitoring for subscriber PPP sessions) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnL2tpPCfgCtlRetranCnt into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. This object indicates a count of the number of times that a control packet was retransmitted. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
