Category: Physical Layer and Interfaces, Vendor: Ericsson

Description: Monitors optical SFP and XFP transceiver parameters including power, temperature, and bias current on Ericsson SmartEdge BRAS.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is RBN-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB?

The RBN-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB is an Ericsson/RedBack Networks vendor MIB that manages pluggable optical transceivers (such as SFP and XFP modules) installed in line-card ports of the Smart Service Router (SSR) family. It exposes hardware inventory and diagnostic data for each transceiver, including its physical location (card slot and port), transceiver and media type, serial number, CLEI code, vendor-approved status, operating frequency/wavelength, and whether digital diagnostic monitoring is enabled. This is fundamentally a hardware health and inventory MIB: it lets an operator confirm optical module identity and compatibility, and, through the diagnostic monitoring flag, identify ports whose transceivers report live optical telemetry such as transmit/receive power and temperature. It is a standalone RedBack/Ericsson module rather than one formally layered on the IETF Entity MIB, though it parallels concepts used in ENTITY-MIB-style pluggable-hardware identification. It is deployed on Ericsson SmartEdge SSR routers to track optical interface hardware for capacity planning, vendor-compliance enforcement, and fault isolation on fiber links. Engineers can download the RBN-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RBN-OPTICAL-TRANSCEIVER-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Ericsson SmartEdge SSR (Smart Service Router)
  • Ericsson SmartEdge line card with pluggable optics

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would walk rbnOpticalTransceiverPortTable/rbnOpticalTransceiverPortEntry, indexed by rbnOpticalTransceiverCardSlot and rbnOpticalTransceiverPort, to inventory installed optics, checking rbnOpticalTransceiverType and rbnOpticalTransceiverMediaType against rbnOpticalTransceiverRbnEricssonApproved to flag unapproved or mismatched modules. Polling rbnOpticalTransceiverDiagMonitoring reveals whether a given port's transceiver supports live diagnostic telemetry, while rbnOpticalTransceiverSerialNo and rbnOpticalTransceiverCLEIcode support asset tracking when a module needs RMA; a sudden change in rbnOpticalTransceiverType or a slot no longer reporting a transceiver flags a physical hardware swap or failure needing investigation.

What Can Be Monitored

  • installed optical transceiver type/media
  • transceiver approved-vendor status
  • transceiver serial number and CLEI code
  • diagnostic monitoring capability
  • operating frequency/wavelength
  • card slot and port location of optics

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rbnOpticalTransceiverActiveAlarmCount OID:

Select an Ericsson SmartEdge SSR line card with pluggable optic (SFP/XFP transceiver inventory/diagnostics) as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rbnOpticalTransceiverActiveAlarmCount into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. It reports the number of alarms active on the Optical Transceiver. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is an INTEGER-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the count changes from its expected baseline, since that would indicate the underlying set of items changed unexpectedly. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
