What Is RAS-MIB?

RAS-MIB is a vendor-neutral ITU-T standards-based MIB defining management objects for a Registration, Admission, and Status (RAS) server, the signaling component of an H.323 gatekeeper used in VoIP call control. It exposes objects related to endpoint registration behavior, such as pre-granted admission requests and registration status by request type, along with conformance group definitions. It is used to monitor the software-level operational status of the gatekeeper's registration process, revealing whether endpoints are successfully registering and being admitted for calls rather than reporting physical hardware sensors. It is built on ITU-T H.225.0 RAS protocol concepts and typically complements other H.323-related MIBs for a full view of VoIP gatekeeper operation. It is typically deployed on H.323 gatekeepers or softswitches handling VoIP endpoint registration and call admission control, consistent with the RAS-MIB RFC definitions it implements.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would monitor rasRegistrationIsregisteredByRRQ to confirm which endpoints have successfully completed registration via Registration Request messages, and check rasRegistrationPregrantedARQ to see whether admission requests are being pre-granted without full validation, which could indicate a relaxed security posture. A drop in successful registrations combined with rising unregistered endpoint counts would reveal a gatekeeper-side registration processing problem or a network reachability issue affecting VoIP endpoints.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using rasStatsGatekeeperConfirms OID:

Select an H.323 gatekeeper or VoIP softswitch as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type rasStatsGatekeeperConfirms into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of granting permission to register messages sent by or received from a gatekeeper. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
