This setting allows BGP route policies to be changed inbound without dropping and re-establishing the BGP session with a peer router, by enabling the local router to store non-best routes in memory. Normally, changing BGP policy requires a full session reset, causing temporary loss of routes. A carrier deploying new BGP route filters during business hours would enable soft reconfiguration inbound to apply the changes without disrupting customer traffic.
