What Is MSDP-MIB?

MSDP-MIB is an IETF experimental-track MIB defined by RFC 4624 for Multicast Source Discovery Protocol (MSDP) speakers, which are routers that exchange information about active multicast sources across PIM domains. It exposes configuration data (enabling MSDP, cache lifetime, RP address), operational counters (number of Source-Active cache entries), and tables for configured SA-request policies and MSDP peer connections. Its monitoring value is centered on protocol/software status for multicast routing -- tracking whether MSDP is enabled, how many Source-Active entries are cached, and the state of MSDP peer sessions, which reveals whether inter-domain multicast source discovery is functioning or whether a peer session has gone down. It is explicitly dependent on and complementary to PIM/multicast routing MIBs since MSDP operates alongside PIM Sparse Mode for inter-domain multicast. It would be deployed on multicast-capable routers acting as MSDP speakers/RPs at the boundary between PIM domains in service-provider or enterprise multicast networks, as formally specified by the MSDP-MIB RFC.

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll msdpNumSACacheEntries and msdpCacheLifetime to gauge how many active multicast sources are currently cached and for how long, and would check the msdpPeerTable/msdpPeerEntry to confirm each configured MSDP peer session is in an established state. A peer entry unexpectedly dropping out of an established state, combined with a falling msdpNumSACacheEntries count, would indicate a loss of inter-domain multicast source visibility, and msdpTraps notifications would alert on such peer state changes.

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using msdpPeerRPFFailures OID:

Select a device implementing MSDP-MIB as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type msdpPeerRPFFailures into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of SA messages received from this peer that failed the Peer-RPF check. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Counter32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases between polls, since a rising count of errors, failures, or discards often points to a real underlying problem. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
