Description: Manages the fast forwarding table for optimized unicast and multicast packet switching.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is RADLAN-rlFft?
RADLAN-rlFft is a vendor-specific private MIB from RADLAN/Marvell managing the Fast Forwarding Table (FFT), a hardware-accelerated lookup table used to optimize unicast, IPX, and multicast packet forwarding decisions on the switch. It exposes configuration and capacity objects covering maximum table size, dynamic/subnet/source-address matching support, aging timeout and polling interval settings, and threshold boundaries (red/yellow) for table utilization alerting. Its monitoring value is tracking forwarding table capacity and utilization health — how close the FFT is to its maximum entry count and whether configured yellow/red utilization thresholds have been crossed — which flags a switch approaching hardware forwarding-table exhaustion that could force a fallback to slower software forwarding. It is a proprietary hardware-forwarding optimization module with no direct IETF standard equivalent. It is typically deployed on RADLAN/Marvell-based switches handling high volumes of unicast/multicast/IPX traffic where forwarding table capacity is a performance-critical resource. Engineers can download the RADLAN-rlFft file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in RADLAN-rlFft. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- RADLAN/Marvell-based managed Ethernet switches
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll rlIpFftNumTable against rlIpMaxFftNumber to gauge current fast-forwarding table utilization, and watch for rlIpFftRedBoundary or rlIpFftYellowBoundary threshold crossings as an early warning of table exhaustion. If the table nears its rlIpMaxFftNumber limit and rlIpFftAgingTimeout is set too long for the traffic pattern, stale entries could be crowding out active flows, degrading forwarding performance for new unicast or multicast sessions.
What Can Be Monitored
- fast-forwarding table entry count vs. maximum
- table utilization threshold (yellow/red boundary)
- aging timeout setting
- subnet/source-address match support
- IP/IPX/multicast FFT support
