Description: Configures broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast storm-control thresholds on Cisco Small Business switch ports.
Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.
What Is CISCOSB-STORMCTRL-MIB?
CISCOSB-STORMCTRL-MIB is a Cisco Small Business (originally RAD/Layer3-based, hence the 'rl' prefix) enterprise MIB that configures storm-control thresholds for broadcast, multicast, and unknown-unicast traffic on switch ports. It exposes per-port configuration of storm-control type, enable/disable state, and rate thresholds, along with platform capability indicators describing which storm types and rate units the device supports. Rather than hardware health, this MIB's monitoring value lies in traffic/performance control: identifying which ports have storm control enabled and at what rate, which helps correlate port shutdowns or packet drops with a triggered storm-control action during a broadcast storm. It has no explicit dependency on other MIBs beyond standard SNMPv2 conventions and the underlying IF-MIB interface model for port indexing. It is deployed on Cisco Small Business switches in SMB network environments to protect against Layer 2 broadcast/multicast storms. Engineers can download the CISCOSB-STORMCTRL-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in CISCOSB-STORMCTRL-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- Cisco Small Business switch
Monitoring Examples
An administrator would poll rlStormCtrlTable/rlStormCtrlEntry to see the configured rlStormCtrlRateType and rlStormCtrlUnknownUnicastRate for each port, confirming whether unknown-unicast storm control is active via rlStormCtrlUnknownUnicastEnable. Checking rlStormCtrlRateSupportPerType against the platform's rlStormCtrlTypeSupport confirms which storm types the hardware can actually enforce. If a port experiences repeated link flaps during high broadcast traffic, comparing its configured storm-control rate against observed traffic volume can confirm the threshold is being hit.
What Can Be Monitored
- storm control enable state per port
- broadcast/multicast/unknown-unicast rate threshold
- supported storm control types
- rate unit type
