What Is PRVT-L2TUNNELING-MIB?
PRVT-L2TUNNELING-MIB is a proprietary BATM Advanced Communication MIB for configuring Layer 2 protocol tunneling, a feature that lets service providers transparently carry customer control-plane protocols — such as Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP), and Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) — across a provider Ethernet network without the provider's own switches processing them. It defines tunneling profiles and per-protocol entries specifying the Ethertype and destination MAC address to match, plus a replacement MAC address used to encapsulate/tag the tunneled frames. The monitoring value here is primarily configuration/service-state verification rather than hardware health: administrators confirm which protocols are tunneled on a profile, that the correct Ethertype/MAC matching rules are in place, and that a profile's row status is active, since a misconfigured tunnel could cause a customer's STP topology to interact incorrectly with the provider network. It is designed for use alongside the broader BATM carrier Ethernet service and switch MIBs (e.g., PRVT-SERV-MIB, PRVT-SWITCH-MIB) that apply tunneling profiles to actual customer services. It is deployed on BATM carrier Ethernet switches at service provider network edges supporting Carrier Ethernet/Metro Ethernet services. Engineers can download the PRVT-L2TUNNELING-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PRVT-L2TUNNELING-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- BATM Advanced Communication carrier Ethernet switch
Monitoring Examples
An operator would inspect prvtL2TunnProfileTable and prvtL2ProtocolsTable to confirm which protocols (via prvtL2ProtocolName, prvtL2ProtocolEthertype, and prvtL2ProtocolMAC) are configured for tunneling under a given prvtL2TunnProfileName. prvtL2ReplaceMAC shows the substitute destination MAC address used to tunnel the frame across the provider core, and verifying this matches expectations helps catch a misconfiguration that would otherwise let a customer's STP BPDUs interfere with the provider's own spanning tree. Checking prvtL2TunnProfileRowStatus confirms whether a profile is active before troubleshooting a customer service issue.
What Can Be Monitored
- tunneling profile configuration
- tunneled protocol/Ethertype
- destination MAC matching and replacement
- tunneling enable state
- profile row status
