What Is PW-GEN-IP-DRAFT-00-MIB?
This is an IETF pseudowire (PW) draft MIB module that defines generic objects for configuring a pseudowire's encapsulation when it runs directly over an IP network, complementing the base PW-STD-MIB. Its data category is configuration/binding data — describing how a pseudowire's Layer-2 emulated service is bound to an IP tunnel/encapsulation rather than exposing hardware environmental data. It is used to monitor the software configuration and operational binding of a PW-over-IP tunnel — verifying the pwGenIpEntry row associated with a given pseudowire is correctly provisioned — which helps confirm whether a pseudowire's IP encapsulation is set up as expected or is a source of packet-forwarding failure. As a companion to PW-STD-MIB it explicitly depends on that base pseudowire MIB (and implicitly on IP-MIB/tunnel MIBs) for the overall PW object model, since this module only adds the IP-specific encapsulation piece. It is deployed on IETF-standards-based provider-edge routers/switches offering pseudowire (Layer-2 VPN) services carried natively over IP rather than MPLS, typically in service-provider networks that track the PW-GEN-IP-DRAFT-00-MIB RFC specification for interoperable PW-over-IP encapsulation.
IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PW-GEN-IP-DRAFT-00-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.
Supported Devices
- vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer
- IETF pseudowire-capable provider-edge router
Monitoring Examples
An operator would poll pwGenIpEntry (the module's sole defined table row) to inspect the IP-specific encapsulation parameters bound to a given pseudowire, confirming that the PW's local/remote IP tunnel endpoints are correctly configured; a missing or inconsistent pwGenIpEntry would explain why a PW-over-IP service fails to establish. Because this is a fairly minimal draft module, no additional counters beyond this entry were captured in the source.
What Can Be Monitored
- pseudowire-over-IP encapsulation binding
- PW-to-IP-tunnel association
