What Is PW-TC-MIB?
PW-TC-MIB is an IETF PWE3 (Pseudowire Emulation Edge-to-Edge) working group MIB module defining shared textual conventions (TCs) and OBJECT-IDENTITY objects used across the pseudowire family of MIBs, covering pseudowire type, status, and encapsulation-layer classifications. As a textual-conventions-only module it defines data types and enumerations rather than instantiable managed objects itself, so it has no directly pollable runtime data; its purpose is to provide a consistent vocabulary (e.g., pseudowire type and status enumerations) that other pseudowire MIBs (such as PW-MIB, PW-ATM-MIB, PW-ENET-MIB) use to report actual pseudowire operational status like up/down state and encapsulation type. Its monitoring relevance is therefore entirely indirect -- it underpins software/protocol status reporting (pseudowire operational state) done by dependent MIBs rather than exposing status data directly. Nearly every PWE3-related MIB module depends on the type and status conventions defined here for consistent semantics. It is used in any carrier network implementing pseudowire emulation (e.g., MPLS or L2TP-based pseudowires) for transporting Layer 2 services over a packet-switched network. Reviewing the PW-TC-MIB OID list is a useful first step for understanding the enumerations and identity values that dependent pseudowire MIBs will later populate with live data.
