Category: Network Interfaces

Description: Defines managed objects for PPP security, managing authentication protocols (PAP/CHAP) for each PPP link.

IPNetwork Monitor uses several OIDs from this MIB in network discovery and polling the applicable devices. Start monitoring PPP-SEC-MIB with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor.

What Is PPP-SEC-MIB?

PPP-SEC-MIB is a private MIB extending the standard PPP-LCP-MIB with PPP security (authentication protocol) configuration. Its security-configuration table, keyed by link, records the preferred authentication protocol and negotiation status, while a companion secrets table (keyed by link and ID) stores authentication secret entries. As a configuration/security MIB it lets an administrator confirm which authentication protocol (e.g., PAP/CHAP) a PPP link prefers and audit its negotiation status. It is deployed on routers/access devices using PPP with security negotiation. Engineers can download the PPP-SEC-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PPP-SEC-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Routers/access devices using PPP with security negotiation

Monitoring Examples

An administrator checks pppSecurityConfigProtocol and pppSecurityConfigStatus for a PPP link failing to establish, confirming whether an authentication-protocol mismatch with the far end is the cause.

What Can Be Monitored

  • PPP link authentication protocol and negotiation status
