Category: WAN

Description: Implements the IETF Point-to-Point Protocol MIB (RFC 1471), managing LCP negotiation state, NCP parameters, and link quality counters.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PPP-MIB?

PPP-MIB is the IETF standards-based MIB defined in RFC 1471 for managing Point-to-Point Protocol links, a vendor-neutral module implementable by any router or access device that runs PPP. It exposes data about link control protocol (LCP) negotiation state, network control protocol (NCP) states for IP, IPX, bridging, and compression, and per-link protocol status. Administrators use it to monitor the operational health of dial-up, leased-line, or tunnel PPP connections — tracking whether LCP has reached the Open state, whether IPCP/IPXCP/BCP/CCP/ECP negotiations succeeded, and whether a link is up, down, or renegotiating, which is essential for diagnosing WAN connectivity faults. It typically depends on and complements the IF-MIB, since each PPP link is represented as an ifIndex-indexed interface entry. PPP-MIB is commonly deployed on routers, remote access servers, and modems terminating point-to-point serial or dial links in enterprise and service-provider WAN environments. Engineers can download the PPP-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PPP-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Routers and WAN access devices running PPP
  • vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, not tied to a specific manufacturer

Monitoring Examples

An administrator can poll pppLinkProtoStateTable, indexed by pppLinkProtoStateIfIndex, to read pppLinkProtoStateLcpState and confirm the link control layer is Open before checking pppLinkProtoStateIpcpState to verify IP connectivity was negotiated. If pppLinkProtoStateBcpState or pppLinkProtoStateCcpState show a stuck 'Starting' or 'Failed' state, it signals bridging or compression negotiation failure on that PPP link. Correlating pppLinkLcpTable entries with the ifIndex from pppLinkProtoStateTable lets an operator pinpoint exactly which physical or virtual interface's PPP negotiation stalled.

What Can Be Monitored

  • LCP negotiation state
  • IPCP/IPXCP negotiation state
  • bridging control protocol (BCP) state
  • compression control protocol (CCP) state
  • encryption control protocol (ECP) state
  • per-interface PPP link type
