Category: Environmental Monitoring

Description: Monitors power supply and fan unit operational status, speed readings, and failure alarm conditions on managed network devices.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is POWERFANS-MIB?

POWERFANS-MIB is a private proprietary MIB (enterprise OID 3902) reporting fan and power-supply status on a networking chassis. Its fan table, keyed by fan number, records fan status and rotation speed, while a power table records power-supply status and temperature per unit. As a hardware-status MIB it lets an administrator watch fan and power-supply health, catching a failed fan or over-temperature condition before it causes a thermal shutdown. It is deployed on chassis equipment with monitored fan/power modules. Engineers can download the POWERFANS-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in POWERFANS-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Chassis equipment with monitored fan/power modules

Monitoring Examples

An administrator monitors fanRotateSpeed and powerTemperature to catch a failing fan or overheating power supply before it causes a chassis thermal shutdown.

What Can Be Monitored

  • fan speed/status and power-supply temperature/status
