Category: ATM, DSL and Broadband

Description: Provides ATM M4 interface extension objects for Paradyne Corporation equipment, covering PVC management and OAM cell statistics.

Start monitoring vendor-neutral, standards-based MIB, any SNMPv3-capable network device (SNMP engine identity/boot/clock status) with a free 30-day trial of IPNetwork Monitor. Import MIBs, browse SNMP OIDs, create custom SNMP monitors, configure alerts, and monitor any SNMP-enabled network device from a single console.

What Is PDN-ATMM4EXT-MIB?

This is a Paradyne Corporation (a DSL/access equipment vendor) enterprise MIB that extends the standardized ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MI (ATM Forum M4 interface management specification) with additional current and historical ATM cell-layer statistics. It exposes performance data such as cell insertion/output counts, input/output cell discards, loss-of-cell-delineation (LCD) events, unknown cell counts, and corrected header-error-control (HEC) errors, tracked in both current and historical extension tables. It is used to monitor the performance/fault status of ATM PVCs and cell-layer transport hardware, revealing link-quality degradation through rising discard counts, LCD events, or HEC error corrections that indicate a physical-layer or cell-alignment problem. It has an explicit, stated dependency on the ATM-FORUM-SNMP-M4-MI standard, whose object model this Paradyne module extends. It is typically deployed on Paradyne ATM access/transport equipment in carrier or enterprise networks running ATM PVC-based services. Engineers can download the PDN-ATMM4EXT-MIB file directly to load it into their MIB browser.

IPNetwork Monitor allows you to monitor SNMP objects defined in PDN-ATMM4EXT-MIB. Use the built-in SNMP Monitoring Browser to explore available variables, view their current values and descriptions, and select the objects you want to monitor. You can then create SNMP monitors, configure thresholds, and receive alerts when monitored values change.

Supported Devices

  • Paradyne Corporation ATM access/transport equipment

Monitoring Examples

An administrator would poll pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrExtTable (via pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrExtEntry) to check pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrCellIns against pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrCellOuts, alongside pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrInDiscards and pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrOutDiscards for a given ATM interface. A rising count of pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrLCDEvents or pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrCorrectedHEC would reveal cell-delineation loss or line-quality degradation on the ATM circuit. Comparing current data against pdnAtmfM4TcProtoHistExtTable's historical pdnAtmfM4TcProtoHistCellIns would show whether the problem is new or an ongoing trend, giving finer cell-layer fault detail than the base M4 MIB alone provides.

What Can Be Monitored

  • ATM cell insertion/output counts
  • input/output cell discards
  • loss-of-cell-delineation (LCD) events
  • corrected HEC errors
  • unknown cell counts

How to Use in IPNetwork Monitor

Example using pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrCellIns OID:

Select a Paradyne ATM access/transport equipment as the target host to create a monitor — the SNMP service should be up and running on it. Click New Monitor, then check SNMP Custom on the Favorites tab, click Next, and confirm the host. On the next page, click Select... to open the built-in SNMP MIB Browser and type pdnAtmfM4TcProtoCurrCellIns into the Find box to locate it in the OID tree, selecting the specific row/instance you want to monitor since this is a table column, then select it and click OK. The number of ATM cells received on this interface since the start of this interval. On the monitor's Main parameters page you can set the target's SNMP port (default 161), credentials, polling interval, and other settings — see the SNMP Monitor help for details. On the State conditions and Alerting tabs, configure when the monitor should change state and trigger an alert; since this is a Gauge32-type OID, Value bounds is the most useful condition here — trigger an alert if the counter increases sharply between polls relative to its normal baseline, since an unexpected spike often reflects a real change in traffic or activity. Click Finish to create the monitor; you can adjust any parameter later.
